Sawada was born in Kawagoe, Saitama, in 1955. He studied sculptureat Tokyo University of the Arts, graduating in 1985 and completing his graduate studies there in 1987. He then moved to Germany as a recipient of a German Government Scholarship and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Nuremberg, where he became a Meisterschüler in 1989 before returning to Japan. His work combines this experience of both Japanese and Western sculpture, while maintaining a strong connection to traditional Japanese aesthetics.
